Muscle Kneading in Corporate Seated Massage

Corporate Chair massage requires specific techniques for reducing stress for a client who is fully clothed and doing it in less the 10 minutes.

i222mages.jpg

The most commonly applied technique is probably Muscle Kneading Technique. This chair massage technique should always be applied transversely (across the body of the muscle).  If you place lubricant on the skin you can press your fingers or knuckles parallel to the length of a structure (longitudinally). This follows the course of the blood and lymph vessels but does not greatly affect the tissue itself. This alternative to traditional Muscle Kneading is called Longitudinal Friction.

Though kneading increases circulation and is valuable to the deeper parts of the muscle, it also creates a difficulty since deep work and the resulting pain will cause the client to tighten up or contract the area being treated.  This also reduces the benefits of the technique.  The solution here is twofold.  1) The part to be worked on must be place in a position that will leave it naturally limp.  2) The practitioner must integrate instructions to the client on visualization and diaphragmatic breathing to reduce the pain. (Talk to your instructor about  “Breathing” and “Visualization”.)

images.jpg

Imagine yourself kneading bread (dough).  Close your eyes and have a sense of the finger and wrist movement that the technique requires.  Used to stimulate the functions of the skin, muscle kneading is especially good for dry skin.  In addition to the skin, it stimulates all vital functions of the body part where it is applied: glands, nerves, blood vessels as well as muscles and connective tissue.  It is the only technique in integrative approach to massage for which oil is used on the skin of a person receiving bodywork. It is done in order to reduce chafing and friction.  After you apply a small film of aromatic oil on the skin, the kneading can begin.

Kneading is experienced by the body as an alternation between relaxation, and compression.  Kneading helps to empty the blood and lymph vessels, and to bring fresh fluids to these areas. This assists in eliminating metabolic toxins and waste matter from the tissues while improving circulation.  It is used routinely during warm-ups by dancers and athletes in order to reduce the possibility of injuries, cramps and muscle spasms.

treatment-1327811__340.jpg

Step 1

After applying a small film of aromatic oil on the area to be worked on, grasp the muscle with a squeezing action of your hand.  If the muscle is properly oiled, it will immediately begin to slip out of your hands.

Step 2

As the muscle slips from your hand, quickly grasp it with your other hand.  The muscle will continue to slide from hand to hand as it is pressed, creating a rolling effect.  Continue the kneading for about thirty seconds to one minute for most areas and about five minutes on the back.

Step 3

Both you and the person you are working on should inhale deeply so that you may both take in the healing aromatic oils that will begin to fill the room from the friction of the kneading.

Muscle kneading has many benefits.  It is especially useful for firming weak muscles.  Of all bodywork techniques, this is probably the most structurally oriented.  It is invaluable in paralysis and in all cases where there has been tissue degeneration.  It can be applied easily anywhere on the body with the exception of the shins, bony joints, and the skull.

In working with muscles near a bone that has been fractured (and has already had the cast removed), or near a sprain, muscle kneading is the technique to choose.

Caution: Avoid using this technique in any situation where deep pressure is ill advised such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer or on irritated skin.

Bodystorming and Problem Solving

In my own consulting and mentoring work I often have to apply game based thinking to scenarios where I know that irrational behavior is likely to influence certain scenarios.  Bodystorming is technique of physically experiencing a situation to derive new ideas. It requires setting up an experience – complete with necessary artifacts and people – and physically “testing” it. Bodystorming can also include physically changing your space during ideation. I have found this approach works best in a group and optimally in a group familiar with the concept of collaborative intelligence. What you’re focused on here is the way you interact with your environment and the choices you make while in it. Think of bodystorming as a physical form brainstorming. Instead of just describing ideas and talking about them, they are acted out in a physical manner. Depending on the group you’re with, it can be a lot of fun to do, and the different mindset can help in discovering insights you wouldn’t easily find in another way.

When done effectively Bodystorming can smooth out the rough edges of a a scenario. It simulates the touch points (contact between payers in a game)  and interactions in actually performing the strategic processes. It animates scenarios so that teams can uncover potential problems and reveal hidden assumptions embedded in the a planned strategy. There are at least four bodystorming techniques documented for different purposes and different stages of strategy development and engagement within the approach.
A bodystorm session might be structured in the following way.

  1. We begin with a “design problem”. A challenge, obstacle or other problems for which a solution is required.
  2. Participants break into small groups to improvise solutions. Post-it notes and pieces of paper serve as stand-ins for any impromptu roles (“angry customer”, “friend under duress”, “a sick patient” etc.) as well as actual solutions. Participants then re-enact their improvised solutions for the other teams, using the post-it notes and paper props.

Elon Musk’s Path to Success

Years ago when I was President of the New York Chapter of the National Speaker’s Association I came to know a nutrition expert named Maye Musk. She had been born in Canada and had moved to South Africa. A very bright and beautiful woman (inside and out) she had done some fashion modeling with some success and had gone into nutrition and public speaking as she raised her three children.

I did not know her well, but we did speak now and then and as my wife would say “she was very nice upon the eyes.”

One day, about eighteen years ago  she passed me on the street. She was holding  hands,  walking with a very charismatic and handsome young man. I stopped to say high and asked jokingly if this was her new boyfriend?

“No” she replied with a sense of irony “This is my son.”

Vision #2.jpg

We both laughed about it, and spoke for a few more minutes.  Her son told me that he was studying computers and had some big visions for the future. I gave him some positive thoughts and wished him great success as I would any young person with a dream.

After all, we were all young once and most of us had dreams for the future.

The conversation ended.

Over the years I would occasionally run into Maye or see her on TV doing an interview on some talk show about wellness and such.

In recent years as I write about game theory and coach people on game based thinking I have been reading articles about the President of Tesla Motors – An aggressive and innovative businessman/philanthropist  named Aron Musk. I never connected the dots between my colleague Maye and this fellow Aron Musk.

Yesterday, after reading another article about Aron Musk I decided to look him up in Wikipedia.

VISIOB.jpg

And there it was in the bio. Aron, changing the world for the better  and worth a bit over 12 Billion Dollars was raised by Canadian/South African Model and nutritionist Maye Musk.

How delightful.

I looked Maye  up on Facebook and it turned out we were already Facebook friends.

I sent her a short note about my meeting her blossoming son years ago and how proud she must be of  his success.

One of the gifts of having over six decades of living under one’s belt is being able to see the trajectory of people’s lives.

How could I know that this young man I met two decades ago would grow up to become a billionaire visionary activist. I hope he is happy. I like what he is doing and what he is about. We crossed paths for a few moments when he had a loving mother and a dream.

Thanks for reading.

Here is the wiki page on Aron Musk.

You may not have had a healthy, balanced, loving mother.

Keeping you in mind, here is a very intense and profound music video concerning his mother who died when he was young. He  wrote this song as part of his “Primal Scream Therapy”.

He says he wrote it for anyone “who was lacking the parent that was needed.”

Thanks for  sharing it with your friends.

Lewis Harrison on Global Politics, Cheaters, Statistics and Data Doctoring

One of the challenges for any problem solver and decision maker is dealing with cheaters – those who act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, or to intentionally avoid something undesirable  by luck or skill.

One of the first things the master decision maker must explore when solving complex and extreme problems is  the quality of the data they must work with.  Often what is discovered  is that  the data they must organize, explore and process has been “Doctored”.  Data Doctoring is the intentional, reckless, or negligent withholding, hiding, altering, fabricating, or destroying of information relevant to creating a statistical report.

DD.png

In my work in game based thinking we often speak of “cheaters”, those in a game who know the rules and also know that they do not have the skill, resources or the ability to win without breaking the rules. Individual’s cheat for one of three reasons 1. Evil intention, 2. Untended ignorance on the part of an otherwise intelligent person 3. Stupidity.

If you do not know how to deal with cheaters in life you will find yourself at a great disadvantage.

I was working with my stress management and chair massage team at a conference on statistics. When it comes to statistics cheating data doctoring takes place so that one can  do away with an unpleasant or  controversial number. This is especially so when dealing with a policy within a bureaucracy  that is extremely unpopular or which brings into question the statisticians’ professional integrity.

Data doctoring is done to hide essential facts and the truth in everything from medical billing, to military supply purchases, to growth measures in industrial production.

DD #1.jpg

“Data Doctoring” is a term that has become  ever more popular as economists explore the ways that many large organizations as well as government’s announce the health of their economies when those economies are anything but healthy.

Of course many multi-national corporations and  governments do this.

Futurist Speaks on the 2016 Global Economic Summit

http://www.amazon.com/Gamification-Business-Lewis-Harrison/dp/1628651083They just completed the Global Economic Summit is Davos, Switzerland. The heads of many nations convene to discuss and even influence the exonomic trends in the word

On the plane out West (I am presently teaching Game Based Thinking and Stress Management  in Southern California and Mexico) I got into a conversation with an economist concerning globalization. Here are some of the ideas that we discussed.Ag 1.jpg

  • In our globalized environment there are many forces and events that propel us forwards and backwards in terms of security, economic abundance and general quality of life. Mixed spot analysis and tools for long-term perspective indicate that one of the key areas that must be addressed is the role of digital technology in our future,  particularly robotics and artificial intelligence.

  • Many developing nations must integrate shifts from a predominantly agricultural economy to an industrial, infrastructure, and export-driven economy. As this take place and often because of this other factors naturally arise especially consumer and discretionary spending, with anti-corruption and reform initiatives also in the mix.

 Ag 2.jpg

  • What globalization has done is create an environment where what one country does can have a huge impact on everyone else. Thus a great year in China is going to be a poor year in any other developing country. This is because at this point in time every economy feels the impact of business instability in China.

  • With increased research in digital technology it is difficult to know what the new breakthroughs in AI are going to be and where they are going to come from.

  • Right now it is showing up in platform based business like Air B & B, Uber and Amazon.

If you have an interest in world affairs and economics but don’t the time to explore this may give you a few things to think about.

AG 3.jpg

How is all this affecting your life? For me? There my chair massage company – eventschairmassage.com – uses a platform business model to connect to meeting planners

Success Through Patience and Persistance

Monday is the day when I write a blog about some extraordinary person. As you may know one of my daily “spiritual exercises” is to explore the lives of those who have changed the world through their sense of vision and their willingness to transcend extreme obstacles. I usually research three people per day; one in the morning, the afternoon and late in the evening just before I finish writing and mentoring my students for the day and go off to meditate.

Today I’m writing about Daniel Eugene “Rudy” Ruettiger.

Though I do not watch football, everyone in my small town seems to and without much struggle I can link Joseph Campbell’s idea of the hero to Rudy.

PP

Daniel Eugene “Rudy” Ruettiger.grew up in Joliet, Illinois dreaming of playing college football at the University of Notre Dame. Though he achieved some success with his local high school team (Joliet Catholic), he lacked the grades and money necessary to attend Notre Dame, as well as the talent and physical stature to play football for a any major intercollegiate program. The thing that he did have was patience and persistance. In the end he fulfilled his dream.

The limitations of human potential are unknown and yet when it comes to thinking creatively and innovatively we are our own worst enemies.

Often is a lack of patience that creates obstacles to our creativity and innovative thinking.  The value of persistence should never be underestimated. Often we have epiphanies, intuitions and “out of the box” ideas which we unfortunately ignore or discard.  It  is often these very ideas that might bring us the solutions to future creative challenges. The difference between success and failure is not the potential at hand but the lost potential from impatience and an unwillingness to persist in spite of perceived challenges.

Multiple studies have shown that with patience and persistence creative thinkers could generate many more ideas for problem solving than they had estimated themselves.

This is a pattern that exists not just among geniuses and visionaries. It could be  used  to help a charitable organization increase donations; to help professional comedians generate  punch lines for a sketch comedy scene and help copywriters generate advertising slogans for a product.

Though many of us seek instant gratification it may be more important to hold off on experiencing that gratification if one wishes to maximize creativity and innovative thinking. Concerning the creative process, studies have shown that ideas generated while being persistent even when doing so was not comfortable tended to be more creative than ideas generated initially. Not only did participants underestimate their ability to generate powerful ideas while persisting, they underestimated their ability to generate highly creative ideas at all.

It is easy to understand why we so often underestimate the benefits of persistence.  It’s because creative challenges feel difficult. Often we feel stuck, a bit out of control, unsure, and even frustrated as we seek a solution. We think we might have the right idea, find it doesn’t work, get frustrated and think about quitting…yet we persist.

“Am I even getting anywhere” we ask ourselves.

Many of the great inventors have said “Creative ideas take time.”

Here are the steps within a basic process for developing the most creative and innovative ideas.

  1. There is an initial period of thinking deeply about problem,
  2. Different ways to frame the problem are considered,
  3. Different possible solution paths are considered.
  4. The best is chosen

PP2

This process has its limitations in thinking creatively in solving complex and extreme problem. Here additional steps must be taken to get the best solution

  1. A “master mind group” is formed of other experts who bring a wide range of ideas into the process.
  2. Through Collective and Collaborative Intelligence the most creative and innovative solutions are isolated
  3. Through Design Thinking*, the best solutions are drawn from these; “the best” meaning the most effective.

Here is a film about Rudy’s journey.

Game Theory, Tech Culture and Political Science

I was speaking to a few technology experts this week at conference I was attending on computer  technology and stress.

I asked a few of the attendees what they thought of the present presidential campaign in the USA and they all pretty much shrugged their shoulders.

images.jpg

After speaking to them further to became clear to me that though technology experts have taken over pop culture there’s one area they haven’t mastered,  politics.

It seems as if much of what happens in politics seems to be completely disconnected from the web-media demands for speed, volume, and topicality.

In my work as a leadership coach, content rich motivational speaker and trainer on game based thinking it has always amused me how the most brilliant leaders, software designers, and computer scientists are ignorant of the basic concepts of political science.

To understand politics one must begin with generally accepted facts, and the ability to discard assumptions. This requires that one give up political labels such as progressive liberal, tea party, conservative or libertarian.  Then one must have a knowledge of games that allows one to contextualize new political information.

This is a highly politicized issue, but my blog post here has no political agenda. I’m not political because nothing could ever possibly be more annoying than American politics. I think both parties have good points, both also have a bunch of dumb people saying dumb things, and I want nothing to do with it. So I approached this post—like I try to with every post—from a standpoint of rationality and what I think makes sense.

Techies often have a distaste for government and politics which often motivates them to define themselves as  ideological libertarians. When pressed to define what this “libertarian ideal” is they are unable to respond.

Lewis Harrison on The Peter Principle and Incompetency

Q. Can we intentionally develop habits of incompetency?

Lewis Answers: Unfortunately the “Peter Principle” (we rise to our level of incompetence) has already made its mark in soft ware design for creating habitual patterns. When I speak at incentive events on cruise lines we sometimes speak about app software designers. It seems that most of the designers of  apps to improve sales technique habits seem to have already reached their level of incompetence.  Many experts who have reviewed these tools, claim that many are poorly designed.  It is not the technical elements that pose the problem. It is the lack of understanding concerning economic behaviorism, intuitive choices and applied game based thinking as well as a clear ignorance of the theories that lie at the foundation of  how habits are formed that are the problem. The apps may be fun to use and at times challenging but they fail to support the development of automatically which is their primary purpose.

Recently we held a conference on stress management at the Catskills Bed and Breakfast – www.TheCatskillsBedandBreakfast.com -. We had speakers  and training session on the Peter Principle and incompetence.  We also  offered corporate on-site chair massage during the breaks. During the conference the question of how does incompetence come about?

The place where habits are likely to form and where memes and RTPs are likely to take hold is through consumerism, especially shopping habits linked to particularly vulnerable emotionally driven “sign posts” in life. These include “major life moments” beginning school, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Valentines’s Day, Confirmations,  vacations, educational certifications, first dates,  graduation, marriage, birth of first child, birthdays, anniversaries, promotions at work, moving to a new home, divorce, and deaths.

Organizations and business who have an understanding of “Big Data” can purchase data and use metaheuristic algorithms  to isolate these events and take advantage of the marketing opportunity.  Amazon.com , Google, Facebook and other social networking platforms have mastered this approach to habit formation.

How to End Your Suffering

Ask Lewis Q. Do you speak about suffering and if so what determines how intense a person’s suffering would be?

Lewis Answers: I speak a lot about it.  A person may be a successful business person or sales person and still suffer.

The origin and cause of the suffering, its processes, the meaning it presents to the individual who is suffering, its related social, personal, and cultural behaviors, the knowledge of how to manage, reduce or eliminate the suffering and the benefits one might accrue for having suffered all influence the intensity of suffering. Add to this the frequency of each occurrence, the concurrence of mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual, factors, combined with the duration of the suffering and you have a very wide range of experiences related to suffering. Buddhism, Landmark education, a slaes training or any other mental approach  can’t transcend this easily.

Tear drop
I have spoken of suffering in other newsletters but I think it is important to revisit the subjects. The 2015 holiday season is upon us and this is a time for great joy and suffering. Suffering can contribute to the organization of meaning in an individual’s psychological and emotional world. It is a mistake to assume that suffering is all negative.  Suffering is merely an expression of natural law and a tool for survival. For the unaware individual, it is often a very negative experience, especially when the result of poor choices one may have made in the recent or distant past.

Suffering is the disruptive, necessary mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual experience of unpleasantness and aversion associated with harm or threat of harm.  There is some suffering which is necessary. All other suffering is a self created illusion.

Compassion, one of the most worthy, desired, and admired of human qualities, comes from our recognition of the suffering of others. The suffering of others may give meaning and direction to our own lives and may motivate and inspire us to serve those in need. This service, in turn, creates a larger sense of community.

There are many variables that might increase or decrease a person’s suffering. The main factor is a person’s attitude about the suffering combined with their emotional response and personal beliefs about such things as whether the suffering was undeserved or deserved, unavoidable or avoidable, useless or useful.

At times ones suffering can be so expansive as to possess mental, emotional, psychological or spiritual elements. Which is worse? It all depends on a person’s perspective on life pain and pleasure. The Wisdom Path is a way to dissolve unnecessary suffering.

Where Truth and Logic Merge

A student asked me “Is there a specific point where the concept of what is “true” and logic merge?”

In game based thinking and Lewis Harrison’s Applied Game Thinking (LAGT)  “truth”  means constancy or sincerity in action or character. In general terms it is difficult if not impossible to specifically define truth since the word has a variety of meanings including a state of being in accord with fact or reality; fidelity to the original or to the standard or the ideal;  or as anything that is the  direct opposite of falsehood. There are various definitions of truth based on whether you are defining something logically, factually, or ethically. Knowing this made me answer the student with , “Yes and no” . My Zen master always liked to say “My statistics teacher always drummed this mantra into our brains:  Statistics don’t lie, but liars use statistics.”

Leadersship #3

Recently we held a conference on stress management at the Catskills Bed and Breakfast – www.TheCatskillsBedandBreakfast.com -. We had speakers, training sessions and offered corporate on-site chair massage during the breaks. During the conference the question of “What is “Truth” kept arising.

Fundamentally, logic is concerned with the patterns in reason that can help tell us if a proposition or statement is true or not. However, there is a concept of truth in an absolute sense that logic cannot effectively. address. How for instance would you use logic to address an emotional feeling, intuition or a metaphysics? Logicians can use formal languages to express the truths which they are concerned with, but this would be a type of truth as under some interpretation  within some logical system.  The question is, “ Is there such a thing possible as an absolute logical truth (also called an analytic truth or a necessary truth)?” For this type of truth to exist it would need to be true in all possible worlds or under all possible interpretations. The mathematician Kurt Godel, a major influence in the creation of LHAGT does not support the idea that such a truth is possible. There will always be some exception.

One of the things that creates confusion for seekers of the truth is that they lack a distinction  between something being “true” and something being a “fact”. In logically based approaches to truth a fact and a truth are different. A fact, though a specific and accurate statement is only specific and accurate in this world and has only become a fact through time and the unfolding of history. However, the truth is specific and accurate not only in this world but in all worlds and all realities. Some philosophers call facts synthetic claims or contingencies because they are only so based and where they happen to exist.

Other  ideas on truth include Russell’s Paradox

Kripke’s Theory of Truth

Gödel’s First Incompleteness Theorem

The Liars’ Paradox
